Then and now

Before I was a mom, I remember going on women's retreats and other trips where moms weren't allowed to bring their kids. The moms were so excited about having a break from their kids. They had looked forward to the week (or weekend) for so long! But inevitably, by the end of the trip, the moms were itching to see their kids again! They were so excited to see them and jump back into life. I remember thinking, "How strange is that? They were so excited to be away from them, but they can't wait to get back to them? I don't get it!"

Now, I totally get it!! This past weekend, John and I went out of town for a wedding. I took Grace to my mom and dad on Friday afternoon. We went to the wedding Saturday night and stayed at a hotel. We had a great time, just the 2 of us. We went out to eat before the wedding and had a great weekend. It was nice to not always be scanning the room to see where Grace was running off to or making sure she was sitting quietly when she needed to be. We enjoyed sleeping in on Sunday and not having a toddler waking us up early. But by the trip home Sunday, we were both wanting to see Grace again. We couldn't wait to even talk to her! (We tried calling but she was too busy playing to bother coming to the phone!) But mom and dad were keeping her until Monday. It was so funny how we were so anxious to see her again! She is such a huge part of our lives that it feels incomplete when she is not with us.

Sunday night after church, I drove to my parents' house, even though Grace would be sleeping when I got there. (John had a lock-in for football, so he wasn't home, so there was no point in me staying at home.) Monday morning, it was so fun seeing her surprised face when she came into the living room and saw me on the couch. It was great to feel her little arms hug me tight. I missed her so much. She had a blast at my parents', especially since her cousins were there too, but I like to think she missed me too. :)

I just chalk this up to one more thing that I understand, now that I am a mom. Moms need (and deserve!) a break, but it's normal to be eager to be back with your kids when that break is done!
