Fun wedding weekend

We just had a great weekend. John, Grace, and I went to Tyler for our friend Julia’s wedding. We met Julia when we were in Germany and have stayed friends. She asked both Grace and me to be in the wedding. I was a little nervous putting an almost 2-and-a-half year old in a wedding, but she did so well!

Saturday was the rehearsal. The wedding was outside at a beautiful castle on a lake in East Texas. We had to walk down several steps to the ceremony location. Grace walked with the other flowergirl, who was 4. They walked all the way down the stairs without falling and made it to the front. As soon as they got to the front, they stopped. Almost immediately, Grace’s diaper fell off!! (She regressed from potty training after she got sick, so she’s back in diapers.) She stood there for a minute, but all of the bridal party couldn’t hold it in. We burst out laughing! The crowd in the audience started laughing too. It was so funny! Unfortunately, Grace is pretty sensitive to laughter sometimes, so she immediately started crying. John grabbed her and took her off to calm her down. It took some time. The next day, she could laugh about it and we told her it was funny, but she didn’t think so at the time!

As soon as our rehearsal ended, it start raining. It rained all night and all day Sunday. We were trying to keep our hopes up about an outdoor wedding, but we were also trying to be realistic. Julia must’ve been praying hard, because about 2 hours before the ceremony, it stopped raining! The staff at the castle dried off the chairs and we were able to hold the wedding outside. Luckily, there was a concrete path the whole way, so we weren’t walking in mud. Grace and the other flowergirl made it down the wet stairs perfectly. We had gone over their “duties” over and over and tried to emphasize that they needed to throw the petals once they got down the stairs. They forgot, of course, so when they got to the front, the maid of honor told them to throw them. They had a great time throwing them in the air all over front! Everyone laughed at that, and thankfully, Grace was having too much fun to notice the laughter.

Luckily, the wedding was in the same town where my grandmother lives, so we were able to stay with her. Grace adores her. She had so much fun with her, asking to snuggle in her lap and just getting excited when she walked in the room. It was really sweet to see. We went to see my step-granddad, who was in the nursing home. He has Parkinson’s, and he’s going downhill quickly. I’m glad we were able to see him for a short time while we were there. I think Grace enjoyed seeing him too. We try to talk about whoever we are visiting before we go visit so she gets excited about the visit, and it definitely worked this time. It was very sweet.

Overall, it was a great weekend, but exhausting! We didn’t get home until about midnight Sunday night. We didn’t stay the night because we both had to work Monday, so Monday was an exhausting day! I’m ready for a nap!
